Regeneración natural y asistida en bosques urbanos en un paisaje del bosque de niebla

Abstract

En paisajes tropicales diversos los bosques urbanos pueden ser reservorios de biodiversidad, y proveer múltiples funciones ecológicas y beneficios sociales; sin embargo, la urbanización ha impactado negativamente su composición, diversidad y funciones. Investigamos la regeneración natural y la regeneración asistida en bosques urbanos de la ciudad de Xalapa, Veracruz, en donde la vegetación original era bosque de niebla. Encontramos 49 especies de árboles y arbustos regenerándose naturalmente, con más especies de árboles, pero más individuos de arbustos; mayor proporción de especies nativas (83 %) que no-nativas (17 %), y de especies pioneras que se establecen en áreas abiertas (51 %) que de tardías tolerantes a la sombra o de bosques viejos (14 %). Debido a la baja abundancia de especies de afinidad sucesional tardía, establecimos plantaciones de enriquecimiento con ocho especies de este grupo. Después de dos años, observamos alta mortalidad (cerca del 40 %), en comparación con el 10 % registrado para especies del mismo grupo en plantaciones establecidas en bosques más conservados de la región. La supervivencia fue mayor en Tapirira mexicana (84.0 %), y la más baja en Quercus xalapensis (33.0 %). Estos resultados resaltan la importancia de asistir o ayudar a la regeneración de especies de sucesión tardía en bosques urbanos en paisajes del bosque de niebla para contribuir a la recuperación de su biodiversidad y funciones.
