Dynamics of Repressive Pressure in Belarus (Specifics of 2025)

Abstract

Large-scale pressure and endless repressions are the reality of modern Belarus. This is evidenced by each new report by human rights defenders.Recently, it has become more difficult to fully monitor repressive pressure. Since 2024, the Belarusian regime has abandoned demonstrative pressure, and since 2025 has generally included a regime of "quiet repressions" - maximum concealment of information about repressions and prosecution for its dissemination. The overall dynamics of pressure can still be assessed. To do this, you can analyze the information that remains open for now: lists of "terrorists" and "extremists", the number of new extremist organizations, and updates to lists of extremist materials (the number of trials and the number of materials themselves). If we add to this the number of (self-)liquidated NGOs and information on new political prisoners,– we get 7 indicators sufficient to understand the trends of repressive pressure on Belarusian society. This presentation presents monthly data on seven of these indicators.
