Plot shapes as reflected in microtoponymy.- Field boundary patterns provide the loom on which the fabric of rural landscapes is woven and unwoven. Studying their complex evolution requires combining documentary and archaeological sources, without neglecting the contribution of such disciplines as lexicology and toponymy. Place names referring to plot shapes provide an inside view of peasant perceptions; the implicit descriptions and assessments contained therein relay information on the origins of field patterns. Drawing on an extensive data base on toponyms from the Castilian-speaking area, an overview is provided on the popular terminology of plot patterns.
