Primary Biodiversity Data Networks & Data Publication with the Integrated Publishing Toolkit

Abstract

This presentation was given during the WiNoDa winter school, a five-day intensive course on the topic of Research with Natural Science Collections. Data, Quality, and Methods from 24-28 November 2025. Organization: German Federation for Biological Data e.V. (GFBio) with support from the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN), German Archaeological Institute (DAI), Vernetzungs- und Kompetenzstelle Open Access Brandenburg (VuK). Abstract: Several networks for sharing primary biodiversity data from observational databases or natural history collections have come up over the past years. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is the largest one facilitating access to more than 3.5 billion occurrence records from more than 100,000 datasets worldwide; numerous smaller, taxonomically or geographically specialized data portals do exist. This session will provide an overview over these networks and the basic principles of sharing primary biodiversity data. The hands-on part will show how to share records from your collection (or observation database) with GBIF through the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT).
