
Most farmers in developing country like Nigeria have resulted to the use of solid wastes as compost to replenish the deteriorated soils while some are farming on the abandoned waste dumpsite due to the richness of such sites in organic matter. This study assessed the soil nutrient and fertility status by investigating the influence of wastes on physical and chemical properties of soils in and around selected dumpsites in Ogbomoso, Nigeria for environmental sustainability. In order to evaluate the effects of municipal solid waste dumpsites on soils, top, middle and down sites soils were collected with the aid of a graduated soil auger at a depth of 15 cm. Samples were also taken 50 m away from dumpsites which served as control. Samples taken were analysed in the laboratory to determine the level of physical and chemical properties such as: pH, particle size distribution, bulk density, Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity (SHC), Organic Carbon (OC), Field Capacity, Wilting Point, Plant Available Water and heavy metals (Zn, Fe, Pb) using standard methods. The findings showed that the bulk density (0.42 ? 1.70 g/cm) and pH 7.1 (slightly alkaline) - 8.8 (alkaline); organic carbon (1.3 - 3.1%) and SHC (1.35-5.61cm/hr) were higher in the polluted area than the control. The results further indicated that the heavy metals with values above the control and permissible limits posed the greatest danger to animals and humans. Therefore, there is need for proper management of municipal solid wastes in Ogbomoso town.
