A ODISSEIA DO COIOTE: A EXPANSÃO DE UMA ESPÉCIE NA ERA DO ANTROPOCENO

Abstract

Abstract – THE COYOTE’S ODYSSEY: THE EXPANSION OF A SPECIES IN THE ANTHROPOCENE ERA. The imminentarrival of the coyote (Canis latrans) in South America marks a new chapter for the continent’s biodiversity. Driven by deforestationand the expansion of pasturelands, this North American species has crossed the Isthmus of Panama and now stands at the doorstep ofColombia. This article analyzes how human-driven landscape transformation and the decline of apex predators, such as the jaguar, have facilitated this journey. We discuss probable routes into Brazil through the Cerrado and Pantanal, the legal challenges regardingits classification as an invasive species, and the hybridization with domestic dogs, highlighting the potential risks to the balance of South American ecosystems. Keywords: cultural zoology; Canidae; Canis latrans; migration; zoogeography.Resumen – LA ODISEA DEL COYOTE: LA EXPANSIÓN DE UNA ESPECIE EN LA ERA DEL ANTROPOCENO.
