Why I like Petri Nets: 4 Reasons

Abstract

Why are Petri nets particularly valuable for business process automation?This video explains four key reasons why Petri nets play an important role in modeling and analyzing business processes. The video highlights the dual nature of Petri nets as both a precise mathematical formalism and an intuitive graphical notation. It discusses their expressive power, positioned between finite automata and Turing machines, and shows how this balance enables meaningful analysis without unnecessary complexity. Petri nets are also presented as an effective training tool for developing modeling skills, as they encourage careful reasoning and allow systematic error analysis. Finally, the video emphasizes the importance of Petri nets in business process modeling, particularly their ability to detect deadlocks and to formally reason about properties such as soundness, which are critical for reliable process automation.
