Abstract Practically all surveys record basic socio-demographic characteristics. While there are established recommendations for corresponding questionnaire items, there is a lack of standards for socio-demographic variables in survey data. The KonsortSWD sub-project "harmonized variables" attempts to fill this gap. This document describes in more detail what socio-demographic standard variables are, how they are constructed, and how the project proceeded with their development. It also documents validation results for those characteristics for which a validation of competing candidates for standard variables appeared useful. Appendix 1 specifies 32 standard variables for 19 socio-demographic characteristics that can be implemented either by individual researchers or by research data centres. Over the coming years, the standard questionnaire items and standard variables for the individual characteristics will also be documented jointly in the open access repository for social and behavioural science measurement instruments ZIS (www.zis.gesis.org).
