This paper examines a fundamental yet often overlooked phenomenon in Islamic higher education management: the gradual displacement of formal administrative authority by algorithmic governance embedded within information systems. While institutional leadership continues to issue policy decrees and administrative circulars, the actual operational authority increasingly resides within validation rules, database constraints, and system logic programmed into campus management software. Using critical reflection on institutional practices in Indonesian Islamic private universities (PTKIS), this study argues that management information systems have evolved from mere administrative tools into de facto governance mechanisms that supersede traditional hierarchical authority. When a system requirement mandates that faculty cannot input grades without completing workload documentation (BKD), the algorithm becomes more authoritative than any rector’s decree. This silent shift raises critical questions about institutional sovereignty, the competency gap between educational leadership and technical implementation, and the need to reconceptualize educational management in an era where “code is law.” The paper concludes by calling for greater digital literacy among educational leaders and a more conscious approach to delegating institutional authority to algorithmic systems.
