Romania 2055: The Future as a Threshold Between Past and Possibility

Abstract

This article explores Romania’s prospective trajectories toward 2055, framing the future as a threshold between historical memory and technological possibility. It argues that emerging technologies—artificial intelligence, blockchain, bioengineering, and neurotechnologies—are not mere tools but strategic resources reshaping culture, economy, and governance. Through a retrospective analysis of Romania’s digital evolution since the 1990s and a critical assessment of current global crises, the study identifies three scenarios: an optimistic model of distributed culture and urban ecotopias; a pessimistic outlook marked by depopulation and bureaucratic digitalization; and a symbolic scenario where technology becomes a medium of cultural regeneration and civic transparency. Emphasizing the role of ethics, education, and participatory governance, the paper contends that Romania’s future depends on its capacity to integrate innovation with meaning, transforming hope into a strategic resource for resilience and regeneration.
