Abstract

Abstract BACKGROUND: In Mexico, the mortality rate from cerebral vascular events is 28.3%, the recurrence rate at two years is 22%, and 30% of patients have severe or permanent sequelae. These conditions significantly impact the degree of functional independence of patients, representing a challenge for the health system and family medicine care. OBJECTIVE: To describe the degree of independence in patients aged 45 to 90 years with CVD sequelae treated at Family Medical Unit No. 84. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study. A sample of 157 beneficiaries with a previous diagnosis of stroke sequelae was considered. The Katz index was applied to determine the degree of functional independence in basic activities of daily living. RESULTS: 62.42% (n=98) of the participants were men and 37.57% (n=59) were women. The median age was 68 years, with an interquartile range (IQR) of 61 to 73 years. Regarding the degree of independence after the vascular event, it was observed that 56.68% (n=89) of the patients were independent or had mild dependence. On the other hand, 18.47% (n=29) had moderate dependence, and 24.84% (n=39) had severe dependence. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of independence in patients with stroke can improve comprehensive care, optimize rehabilitation resources, and strengthen the focus on family medicine.
