Preparing for Discoveries in the Search for Life

Abstract

The 2024 NASA-sponsored workshop Communicating Discoveries in the Search for Life in the Universe (CDSLU) brought renewed attention to a longstanding challenge: how to prepare for the social and cultural dimensions of discoveries in the search for life beyond Earth. Participants emphasized that discovery is not a single moment, but a process shaped by communication choices, preconceived expectations, and different interpretations across diverse audiences. The recent episode involving exoplanet K2-18b, where preliminary biosignature claims grabbed international headlines before being walked back, is likely a sign of things to come. Now is an ideal moment to take stock of how the astrobiology and SETI communities are preparing for discovery, and to discuss what still needs to be done. As detection methods improve and observational data accumulates, we can expect more announcements like this: ambiguous and publicly contested. This presentation draws from the CDSLU workshop and its report to explore what planning for discoveries might look like in practice. It examines K2-18b in light of earlier episodes like Viking, ALH 84001, BLC-1, and Venus phosphine, each of which revealed how excitement, complexity, and media dynamics can outpace ad hoc and “just-in-time” communication efforts. These reactive approaches have often proven ineffective, and in some cases, even counterproductive. To prepare to navigate discovery claims more effectively, my talk argues for sustained collaboration beyond the natural sciences and across disciplinary lines. It also explores examples including LIGO, where the detection of gravitational waves was preceded by detailed simulations of discovery and early communication planning. It concludes by reflecting on the research and institutional infrastructure still needed to support a more sustained approach, especially as new international and commercial actors join the search for life.
