
The training process for cytopathology technicians was marked by both the lack of standardization of courses and in-service training. Understanding the work performed by cytopathology technicians in their professional practice is one way to understand which skills are necessary for their training. This article aimed to understand the perception of eight cytopathology laboratory professionals about what knowledge, skills, and attitudes they consider necessary for the performance of a cytopathology technician. To achieve this objective, a qualitative study was conducted with an exploratory approach and intramethod triangulation, through the application of a questionnaire and interviews to laboratory supervisors from October 2023 to April 2024. Gynecological reading cytology slides was the most sought-after knowledge among professionals who supervise cytopathology technicians. Preparing histological slides was considered a very important skill for half of the Respondents. Being attentive. and ethical during professional practice was considered by all participants as very important during the execution of laboratory activities. The role of cytopathology technicians has been discussed in light of changes in cervical cancer screening policy in the SUS. Understanding the skills that laboratories look for when hiring this professional contributes to the construction of a standardized curriculum that meets the demands of this area .
