Abstract The political participation of young people is a crucial issue for strengthening democracy and promoting a more inclusive and just society. This qualitative study, using a phenomenological approach, analyzes the perceptions of twenty-five young activists in the Puno region regarding their involvement in local and regional politics. The results show that young people consider their participation in social organizations and leadership positions fundamental, but they face significant obstacles such as economic inequality, corruption, and psychological violence, which limit their access to political office and their influence on public decisions. They also assert that the influence of economic power in politics promotes corrupt practices, excludes young people with fewer resources, and perpetuates inequalities along with internal migration. However, the participants also highlight factors that favor their participation, such as the opening of institutional spaces, the promotion of gender equality, and political responsibility, understood as both a burden and an opportunity to exercise leadership. Civic education, the creation of political training programs, and regulatory frameworks are key proposals for strengthening their role in decision-making. In conclusion, empowering young people, recognizing their potential, and ensuring equitable conditions are essential steps to strengthen youth participation and build a democratic and sustainable society in Puno.
