Multilingual working and reading version of the "Genadendal Diaries" from Genadendal Museum. Part I: 1792-1800

Abstract

The Genadendal Diaries describe the development of the town of Baviaanskloof/Genadendal (South Africa) from 1792 onwards. They are available in a wide variety of versions and translations. The version presented here is the three-volume edition from the Genadendal Museum. Various parts of this version from the Genadendal Museum have already been published (e.g., the first two volumes by Bredekamp and Pliiddemann in direct translation into English), which will be supplemented and expanded by this multilingual working and reading version. After automatic transcription, normalization, and translation (into English and Afrikaans), the diaries will be made available and further processed to ultimately provide a complete corpus for further research. The Genadendal Museum team is responsible for the primary digitization and data curation of the first three volumes (and thus the first part of the diaries from 1792-1800). The automatic transcription, normalization, and translation took place in Dresden. The project was funded from 2021 to 2025 as part of virTUos (virtual Teaching and Learning at TU Dresden in an Open Source Context) by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education Teaching and will be continued as part of the activities of the Moravian Knowledge Network.
