Psychology of elite philanthropy: the transformation of HNWIs motivational patterns from status consumption to existential self-actualization

Abstract

The article is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the psychological mechanisms that determine the evolution of the philanthropic activity of representatives of HNWIs groups, for whom charity becomes not only an instrument of social positioning, but also a space of existential self-actualization. The paper examines the transformation of motivational patterns from demonstrative, status-based consumption to deeply personal strategies focused on the search for meaning, self-transcendence and long-term impact on the social environment. Special attention is paid to the changing perception of philanthropy publicity, the transition from image-based practices to genuine value engagement, as well as the influence of age, cultural and identification factors on the choice of philanthropic behaviors. The mechanisms of the formation of psychological returns from charitable activities are analyzed, including a sense of mission, legacy management, compensation for existential anxiety and the desire for symbolic immortality. The article also reveals the role of elite social networks, wealth as a factor of freedom of choice, and mental models of responsibility that determine the transition to sustainable, strategically oriented forms of philanthropic activity.
