İslâmcılık: Kavramsal ve Tarihsel Kökenler

Abstract

This study examines the emergence of modern Islamism from the late Ottoman period to the establishment of the Republic, addressing its conceptual and historical dimensions. The Ottoman Empire’s decline in comparison to the West and its internal crises gave rise to a variety of political ideologies, among which Islamism developed as a modern ideology with both social and political dimensions. Although definitions of Islamism vary among scholars, this study adopts the view that the movement possesses a dual character, comprising inward-oriented political and institutional Islamization efforts as well as outward-facing pan-Islamist strategies. The study analyzes the evolution of Islamism within the framework of the Ottoman reform movements, particularly through the lens of the “three styles of politics,” discussing the intellectual contributions of the Young Ottomans and Islamists of the Constitutional period. It also explores the diverse roles and contributions of Islamists during the Turkish National Struggle, thereby highlighting the political dynamism and shifting strategies of the movement. Methodologically, the study is limited to the early Republican period and focuses on conceptually delineating the fundamental ideological and political components of modern Islamism. In doing so, it sheds light on the historical transformation and internal diversity of Islamism, emphasizing its distinctive position among modern political ideologies.
