Paraguay antes y después de la Guerra de la Triple Alianza: Devastación demográfica, exclusión geopolítica y resiliencia económica

Abstract

Este artículo examina la evolución histórica y económica de Paraguay desde el período previo a la Guerra de la Triple Alianza (1864–1870) hasta su prolongado proceso de reconstrucción institucional y estabilización macroeconómica. Se argumenta que la destrucción demográfica, productiva y estatal sufrida por el país constituye un caso extremo y sin precedentes en América del Sur, cuya magnitud alteró de manera profunda y duradera su estructura social, económica e institucional. Lejos de representar un proceso funcional o deseable, esta ruptura histórica impuso severas restricciones estructurales que condicionaron las decisiones de política económica en las décadas posteriores. En este contexto, el artículo sostiene que las estrategias de prudencia fiscal y estabilidad monetaria observadas en Paraguay durante el largo plazo emergieron como respuestas adaptativas a una experiencia histórica traumática, diferenciando su trayectoria macroeconómica de la de otras economías del Cono Sur.
