Bilinç-Doğa Birlikteliği ve Davranışın Bütünselliği

Abstract

Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s The Structure of Behavior can be read as a significant alternative to the reductive and physicalist approaches in contemporary philosophy of mind. Merleau-Ponty aims to overcome the shortcomings of the mechanistic framework inherited from Cartesian thought in explaining the consciousness-nature relationship. Additionally, he addresses this relationship by building a bridge between the dominant intellectual currents of his time, empiricism and intellectualism. Placing the concept of behavior at the center of his work, Merleau-Ponty critiques classical reflex theory, stimulus-response structures, and the reductive approaches to brain and physiological processes. He argues that behavior cannot be explained by reducing it to neural circuits or stimuli, asserting that it constitutes a dynamic and holistic form shaped by the organism’s interaction with its environment. He supports this argument by drawing on the experiments of the renowned researcher of his time, Pavlov. Merleau-Ponty particularly examines Pavlov’s theory of conditioned responses to highlight the significance of the organism’s interaction with its environment. Furthermore, through his conceptualization of form, Merleau-Ponty seeks to integrate the physical, psychic, and vital dimensions, moving beyond dualistic thinking. Accordingly, this article aims to analyze The Structure of Behavior to reveal the importance of the consciousness-nature unity and to elucidate the holistic nature of behavior.
