Visual Design Literacy in Logistics 4.0 Education Framework

Abstract

This diagram illustrates the conceptual framework of Visual Design Literacy in Logistics 4.0 Education, positioning visual design literacy as a core competency for interacting with intelligent logistics systems. The upper section represents the Logistics 4.0 environment, characterized by real-time data, automation, intelligent decision support systems, and increasing demands for sustainability and governance. These conditions expose an educational gap in which logistics education remains predominantly technical and quantitative, with limited emphasis on users’ visual and cognitive capabilities. At the center of the framework, visual design literacy functions as a cognitive bridge between system complexity and human decision-making. This core competency is articulated through five interconnected dimensions: data comprehension and visual hierarchy, system and network visualization, risk and uncertainty visualization, sustainability and circular economy representation, and governance and transparency-oriented interface design. Together, these dimensions form the pedagogical foundation for integrating visual design principles into logistics education. The lower part of the diagram highlights the expected educational outcomes, including enhanced decision-making quality, reduced cognitive load, strengthened human–machine collaboration, and support for sustainable and transparent logistics practices. Overall, the framework emphasizes visual design literacy as a cognitive infrastructure that connects technology, education, and management within the Logistics 4.0 ecosystem.
