Letter Instruction in the Initial Writing Process in Turkey and Germany

Abstract

Effective letter instruction in the initial writing process contributes to the permanent and accurate development of students’ basic reading and writing skills and supports language acquisition. The aim of this study is to reveal the similarities and differences in the methods used for letter instruction during the initial writing process in Turkey and Germany. Accordingly, the Maarif Model İlk Okuma Yazma Kitabı 1 and 2 used in Turkey and the Meine Fibel Arbeitsheft Druckschrift and Meine Fibel Schreiblehrgang Druckschrift used in Germany were examined through document analysis. In addition, the relevant literature was reviewed, and the information obtained was used to shape the findings section of the study. The study was conducted within the qualitative research design of a case study. Findings indicate that textbooks in both countries function as a fundamental guide; however, teachers make instruction more effective and student-centered by employing multi-sensory activities and concretization-based methods. While the content of textbooks in Turkey was found to be well-developed, the need to increase the diversity of activities was emphasized. In Germany, the organization of content and the necessity of language support for immigrant students came to the fore. The study concludes that the process of letter instruction should be supported in a multifaceted manner through complementary materials, the use of technology, individualized and play-based activities, effective teaching strategies, continuous professional development of teachers, and collaboration with families. Keywords: Germany, Letter Instruction, Initial Writing Process, Turkey Özet İlk yazma sürecinde gerçekleştirilen etkili harf öğretimi, öğrencilerin temel okuma ve yazma becerilerinin kalıcı ve doğru biçimde gelişmesine katkı sağlamakta ve dil edinim sürecini desteklemektedir.
