
This paper examines how recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are affecting Indian languages across technology, education, governance, media, and culture. It reviews major initiatives (governmental, academic, and industry), datasets and tools enabling progress, measurable impacts (access, inclusion, content generation), and the substantial challenges that remain for low-resource and morphologically rich Indian languages. Policy recommendations and directions for future research are provided. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in shaping linguistic landscapes across the world, and its influence on Indian languages is particularly significant given the country’s vast multilingual and multicultural diversity. India is home to more than 22 officially recognized languages and hundreds of dialects, many of which face challenges of preservation, accessibility and standardization in this digital era. This research paper examines the impact of AI on Indian languages, focusing on how AI-driven tools such as machine translation, natural language processing (NLP), speech recognition, and generative text technologies are redefining communication, education, media, and cultural exchange. The study highlights the positive contributions of AI, including the democratization of knowledge through translation apps, the promotion of regional content in digital spaces, and the development of speech-to-text systems that empower users in rural and urban contexts alike. AI also plays a vital role in language preservation by creating digital corpora, facilitating linguistic research and enabling inclusive access to information for speakers of minority. At the same time, the research critically engages with challenges such as data bias, the dominance of English and Hindi in digital platforms, the under representation of smaller Indian languages in AI datasets, and the risk of homogenization of linguistic diversity. Ethical considerations, including cultural sensitivity and the protection of linguistic identity, are also emphasized. By analyzing both opportunities and limitations, the paper argues that AI has the potential to strengthen India’s linguistic richness if implemented thoughtfully and inclusively. The findings suggest that a balanced approach—combining technological innovation with cultural preservation—is essential to ensure that AI not only supports communication and development but also safeguards the diverse heritage embedded in India’s languages.
