
O pericárdio consiste de duas membranas: visceral e parietal. Entre as duas encontra-se um líquido que visa diminuir o atrito entre as duas partes. A pericardite então é o processo inflamatório do pericárdio que faz com que ocorra um grande acúmulo do líquido ou um espessamento da membrana, isso gera uma dor torácica aguda que piora ao respirar ou tossir. O que faz com que uma das características marcantes dessa inflamação seja a natureza postural, pois o paciente sente melhora da dor ao sentar e inclinar o tronco para frente. Além disso, pode decorrer de diversos fatores como: infecção,autoimune,neoplásico, pós-evento cardíaco, congênito, metabólico e outros.
