TIKTOK AND EMOTIONAL SATISFACTION OF TERTIARY INSTITUTION STUDENTS IN ABIA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study examined the influence of TikTok on the emotional satisfaction of tertiary student users in Abia State, Nigeria. It sought to determine the extent of exposure of students to TikTok, identify the motivations for its use, and assess the degree of emotional fulfillment derived from the platform. Guided by the Uses and Gratifications Theory, the study adopted a survey design. A structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of 382 respondents drawn from a population of 59,721 students across public tertiary institutions in Abia State. Findings revealed high exposure and active participation on TikTok; primary motivations included entertainment, creativity and social connection. Results showed that TikTok provides peace of mind, relaxation and a sense of belonging, and that there is a strong positive relationship between TikTok use and emotional satisfaction (r = 0.83). The study concluded that TikTok positively influences students’ emotional wellbeing while cautioning against excessive use. Recommendations include promoting responsible use and incorporating digital literacy for healthier engagement.
