Cultura Surda

Authors: Guennes Sorrentino, Denise da Silva Rodrigues;
Abstract

This article was written in an attempt to show the importance of a second language learner having their assimilation process of that second language within their own culture and with the help of their mother tongue. Furthermore, it was necessary to break down some paradigms and stigmas regarding the deaf community, such as the idea that ‘being hearing is better than being deaf’ and some aspects related to the intellect of deaf people. This article presents a brief study of the approaches of oralism, total communication, and bilingualism, attempting to clarify the characteristics and methods inherent to each of them.
