Review assesses the state of the art regarding the use of livestock for ecosystem management in Mediterranean landscapes

Abstract

The use of domestic herbivores in ecosystem management contributes to fire prevention and biomass control, but this effect fades when pastoral activity is long-term. The use of goats performs better in terms of biomass control when compared to other domestic livestock species. The effects on biodiversity and habitat conservation were positive when the grazing regime was extensive or moderate, and significantly negative when the regime was intensive. The effect of livestock farming on regulating soil quality is always negative, and its impact increases with the intensity of the grazing regime practised.
