Culex (Microculex) hedys Root 1927

Abstract

Culex (Microculex) hedys Root, 1927 Culex (Microculex) hedys Root, 1927: 584 (♂ G). Holotype in USNM. Type locality: Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Male genitalia (Fig.1): Tergum IX lobes developed, slender, length 5–6x width; distance between lobes 3–4x basal width; 3 simple, short setae at apical and subapical levels. Gonocoxite oblong; distal division with fine, straight group of setae. Columnar process short with group of similar-length setae, 1 more developed and inserted in internal surface; apex with 2 strong, pointed setae (a and b), inserted at same level; seta a shorter than seta b. Gonostylus wide, strong, elongate, claw-like; abrupt curve in medial area; group of spicules on dorsal surface close to terminal area; broad, leaf-like gonostylar claw with pointed apex. Aedeagus with prominent, strong ventral process; dorsoventral process pointed; dorsal process long, thorn-like. Aedeagal sclerite narrow, hook-like; apical process with concave depression. Tergum X with inner process; concave external outline. Paraproct elongate; dilated basal region; crown with 4 pointed blades less curved than in other species. Distribution: Brazil and Colombia.
