Abstract

FIGURE 3. Illustrations drawn from live Naja kaouthia captured in the vicinity of Kolkata, India (within the type locality of "Bengale") are included in The Thanatophidia of India (Plate 3, Plate 4; Fayrer 1872). These illustrations, produced by Annoda Prasad Bagchee at the School of Art in Calcutta, depict the broad variation in color, pattern, and hood markings present among individual snakes collected within proximity of one another in the type locality.
