10 Years of Quality Controlled Carbonate Measurements from the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Coastal Endurance Array

Abstract

Hourly measurements of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in the air and surface water collected by the OOI Coastal Endurance Array using the Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro ATM sensor combined with data from the co-located ASIMET meteorological sensor suite measuring (among other variables) the sea surface temperature, salinity and wind speed. This data has been re-processed from source data available on the OOI Gold Copy THREDDS catalog. Hourly burst measurements (9 samples per burst) are averaged for the separate air and surface water pCO2 data sets, and the hourly averaged surface temperature, salinity and wind speed data from the ASIMET system are added to create a single, merged data record with automated and human-in-the-loop (HITL) quality control flags applied. The ocean to atmosphere pCO2 flux is recalculated using the QC'ed data, an estimated total alkalinity product is added (Fassbender et al. 2017), and PyCO2SYS (Humphreys et al. 2024) is used to estimate the surface sea water pH and aragonite saturation state based on the measured surface pCO2 concentation and estimated total alkalinity. Note, the data record is gappy in time; if no data was available for both the air and surface water pCO2 measurements, then that timestamp was not included. Data is organized in both NetCDF and Zarr files (in Zarr ZipStores) per mooring location differentiated by the file contents: Mooring Location Per Deployment (NetCDF only) Continuous (NetCDF and Zarr) Oregon Shelf Surface Mooring (80 m site depth) CE02SHSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.per_deployment.nc CE02SHSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.nc CE02SHSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.zarr.zip Oregon Offshore Surface Mooring (572 m site depth) CE04OSSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.per_deployment.nc CE04OSSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.nc CE04OSSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.zarr.zip Washington Shelf Surface Mooring (87 m site depth) CE07SHSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.per_deployment.nc CE07SHSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.nc CE07SHSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.zarr.zip Washington Offshore Surface Mooring (542 m site depth) CE09OSSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.per_deployment.nc CE09OSSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.nc CE09OSSM-SBD12-04-PCO2AA000.hourly.continuous.zarr.zip In the 'per_deployment' files, data from overlapping deployments is made available for researchers wishing to assess the data on a per deployment basis. The deployment number is included in the data record and the data has been sorted by deployment number and then time. A potential downside to these files is the time record is not monotonic, which may cause some issues depending on how the data is analyzed. These files are only available in NetCDF format. For those wishing to work with monotonic time records, the overlapping deployment data has been averaged and the deployment variable has been dropped. These 'continuous' files are available in both NetCDF and Zarr format (as Zarr ZipStores).
