Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to determine the effects of recycling workshops and recycling education and activities in schools on students' recycling attitudes, as well as middle school students' knowledge about recycling and their attitudes towards recycling. The research was designed according to a pretest-posttest single-group experimental research model. The study group consisted of 114 middle school students in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at a state middle school in the Tekkeköy district of Samsun province. In the study, a survey was administered to determine students' recycling behaviors and the effects of the workshops on recycling behavior, and in-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured questions. Data were collected using the "Reuse Project Survey" and a semi-structured interview form. The data collection tools were used as a pre-test before the experimental procedure and as a post-test after the experimental procedure. As an experimental procedure, a "Recycling Workshop" was established at the school, and recycling practices were implemented. Data were analyzed as percentages. Students' attitudes were evaluated by examining whether there were significant differences between the pre-test and post-test score averages and their responses to the semi-structured interview form. The study concluded that students have sufficient knowledge about recycling, that schools play a significant role in determining recycling behaviors, and that recycling practices and school Recycling Workshops positively impact their knowledge, behavior, and motivation regarding recycling. Furthermore, socially themed activities and workshops related to recycling were found to contribute to students' environmental attitudes, their talent development, their personal development, and their social relationships. Six different themes were identified regarding the benefits of recycling, and three related to the effects of designing products/materials for recycling. The findings were discussed considering the literature, and recommendations were made for upcycling waste. Keywords: Recycling, Recycling Behavior, Consumption, Workshop, School.
