ENHANCING THE GRADE 7 STUDENTS' SPELLING SKILLS THROUGH LEXIS-SPELL PUZZLE

Abstract

This study aimed to enhance the spelling skills of Grade 7 students at Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades during the second semester of SY 2023–2024 through the integration of the Lexis-Spell Puzzle. Involving 64 students and one resource teacher, the intervention focused on three components: identifying spelling issues, applying spelling rules, and modifying crossword puzzles to boost engagement. Materials were developed using traditional tools and PowerPoint slides, incorporating common misspelled words identified through pre-interviews and observations. Results revealed a significant improvement in spelling skills, with the mean pre-test score of 8.06 (poor) rising to 21.67 (satisfactory), reflecting a 13.61-point gain. Quantitative and qualitative data supported these findings. The study concludes that Lexis-Spell Puzzle effectively enhances spelling proficiency and recommends its use in English instruction for its engaging and visual appeal, as well as its support in teaching morphology.
