
This paper explores the significance of intonation in English language teaching and learning, with a focus on its role in conveying meaning, emotion, and discourse organization. Intonation is a crucial aspect of spoken language, and its mastery is essential for effective communication. Discourse is important in communicating thoughts into ideas. It could be oral or written. Communication allows language users to interact with each other and in turn understand what others are trying to convey through special writing and oral skills. This paper, therefore, describes what is meant by oral discourse, differentiates the oral longer discourse from ordinary conversation and dialogue and how meaning is arrived at in oral discourse through the use of variation in tone and pitch. It further looks at textual relations, what cohesive devices are and how the different cohesive devices in writing could help readers and writers achieve meaning. It finally explores how these cohesive devices make up textual relations by paving way for the achievement of meaning in oral and written texts.
