The SQ3R method is a structured approach to reading that divides the process into five steps: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. While the method is often discussed as a whole, less attention has been given to evaluating the effectiveness of each step individually. This paper examines the evidence supporting the value of each component, drawing on research in reading pedagogy, note-taking, elaboration and memory. Findings indicate that each step aligns with well-established learning principles and can be effective even when used independently. Practical applications for readers of non-fiction texts are included, along with a brief discussion of common variations of the method.
