Las dunas costeras de la península de Yucatán: Un ecosistema que necesitamos

Abstract

Este folleto presenta de manera accesible la importancia ecológica, social y ambiental de las dunas costeras de la península de Yucatán, un ecosistema esencial pero altamente vulnerable. Describe su origen, su dinámica natural y el papel crucial que desempeñan como barreras protectoras frente a tormentas, huracanes y la erosión costera. También destaca su función como reservorios de arena para la regeneración de playas y como sistemas que infiltran, almacenan y filtran agua dulce. El documento resalta la extraordinaria biodiversidad asociada a las dunas, adaptada a condiciones extremas de salinidad, calor y vientos fuertes. Mediante ilustraciones y explicaciones sencillas, se presentan las adaptaciones fisiológicas y morfológicas de plantas y animales que permiten la supervivencia en este ambiente. Asimismo, el folleto aborda las principales amenazas que enfrentan estos ecosistemas: expansión urbana y turística, construcción sobre dunas, tránsito vehicular en playas, extracción de arena y vegetación, contaminación, iluminación artificial y los efectos del cambio climático, como el aumento del nivel del mar y la intensificación de tormentas. Finalmente, se ofrecen recomendaciones prácticas para distintos públicos —residentes, visitantes, propietarios y autoridades— enfocadas en proteger, restaurar y manejar de forma sostenible las dunas costeras. Se promueve la educación ambiental, la participación comunitaria, la creación de áreas protegidas y el diseño de políticas públicas que garanticen la conservación de estos frágiles ecosistemas.
