SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND STREE IN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN INHAMBANE, MOZAMBIQUE.

Abstract

Studies on mental health in higher education students often point out that this is a population group that is very affected by various mental problems related to their academic experience. However, it was found that, in Mozambique, the area of student mental health has received little attention in research and in institutional student assistance policies. This study aimed to evaluate the symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress in 386 students from various undergraduate courses at a public university, located in Inhambane - Mozambique. To this end, cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative research was developed, applying the sociodemographic and academic data questionnaire and the Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scale (EADS-21). Descriptive analyzes (means, standard deviation and frequencies) and Cronbach's alpha were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 22 and Jamovi, version 2.5. The results revealed that most investigated students present symptoms in the dimensions of stress and anxiety. Among the phenomena investigated, the most frequent in the sample was stress. Faced with this emerging reality, the implementation of policies to care for students' mental health and carrying out research on the social determinants of mental suffering are necessary, pertinent and urgent actions.
