An Examination of How Engagement in School Sports Influences Students' Sense of School Belonging

Abstract

It is an important issue to investigate students' feelings of belonging to school, as students' feeling of belonging to school and going willingly will affect their academic success. This research was designed to examine students' participation in school sports teams, which is thought to affect their sense of belonging to the school. A total of 721 students, 375 from secondary school and 346 from high school, participated in the study. While the number of students in school teams was 330, the number of students who were not in school teams was 391. As a result of the analyses performed with the SPSS 27.0 package program, it was determined that the data showed normal distribution and parametric tests were applied. According to the research findings, no statistical difference was found in the gender variable in the sense of belonging to the school. Middle school students' sense of school belonging scores are higher and statistically significant than the average scores of high school students. However, according to the variables of taking part in the school team, supporting the family's child to do sports, and school administration/teachers supporting the student to do sports, it was determined that the school-belonging scores of the participants who said yes were higher and statistically significant compared to the participants who said no.
