Abstract

This article examines the conception of avant-garde visual arts held by the Chilean writer Juan Emar (1893–1964) as described in his 1935 novel, Miltín 1934, and the inclusion of three images of famous avant-garde artists (Arp, Ernst, and Picasso) within it. Following an intense public presence as an avant-garde art critic under the name Jean Emar (1923–1926), this article re-examines his vision of the value of avant-garde visual arts by addressing, for the first time, this visual material that reveals Emar, in his country and region of origin, as a (re)articulator of avant-garde aesthetics, specifically in 1935.
