One of the worst things to happen to humanity is slavery. The colonial powers of the day would enslave the Africans and send them to far off continents. The enslaved people would change hands multiple times and they were kept in the worst possible conditions. Many of these people had died during these long voyages and many died at the plantations due to the tortures meted out to them by their “colonial masters”. In 1834, Britain passed the Slavery Abolition Act which made slavery illegal. The colonial powers came up with a workaround called the Indentured Labour system. Many Indians were fooled or forced into the indentured labour system and taken to far off countries. The Indians were promised that they would be taken to places where the Indians would work in plantations, and they would be paid a handsome amount. The agreement also said that the Indians would be set free after 5 years after which they could come back to India. Most of the Girmitiyas could never return to India as the return fares were too high for them to afford. These indentured labourers from India called themselves ‘Girmitiya’. Girmit is a distorted form of the word ‘Agreement’. The Girmitiyas and their descendants, who have settled down in these far-off places, have kept India in their hearts. The indentured diaspora is now spread across the globe. The descendants of Girmitiyas have embraced the cultures of the natives which has given birth to new forms of music, languages, and cuisine.
