Developed under the Unfake Social Media project’s Lateral Reading category, Breaking Fact invites players to rethink how they interact with news — not as passive consumers, but as curious explorers who question, remix, and reinterpret information. Rather than proving whether a headline is true or false, players playfully reshape news stories, experiment with framing, and experience how wording, emphasis, and perspective influence interpretation. By approaching information as both creators and consumers, participants learn how easily meaning can shift depending on how news is presented. The game sharpens players’ awareness of narrative manipulation, encourages flexible thinking, and builds a deeper understanding of how we make sense of information in a fast-changing media landscape. It turns news processing into a creative challenge — helping players develop sharper instincts every time they encounter a story online.
