
This document specifies RS485MM, a distributed multi-master protocol operating on top of the RS485 physical layer. RS485MM introduces deterministic token-based arbitration, multi-slot join procedures, dynamic priorities, urgent preemption, and distributed topology consensus, while maintaining full backward compatibility with Modbus RTU slave devices. The protocol enables RS485 networks to operate in a collision-free multi-master mode using existing hardware, making it suitable for residential HVAC systems, home automation, and retrofits.
