Herpailurus yagouaroundi

Abstract

Herpailurus yagouaroundi (É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1803) Material examined. Costa Rica • Puntarenas Province, Karen Mogensen Wildlife Refuge; 09°52'24"N, 085°03'30"W; 362 m alt.; 15.02.2019; camera trapping. Identification. Medium-sized cat. Elongated body, long tail and proportionately short legs. Fur varies in colour from black-grey to reddish-brown. The black phase jaguarundi can look similar to Eira barbara (see below) but can be distinguished by a thinner tail and the absence of a white patch on the throat (Wainwright 2007). Mainly diurnal, unlike other cats of the Wildlife Refuge, which are nocturnal or cathemeral (Beal et al. 2020; Reid and Gόmez Zamora 2022). Uncommon in the Wildlife Refuge. Recorded in various habitat types.
