El pensamiento filosófico kantiano y los animales: Una revisión

Abstract

El pensamiento kantiano es habitualmente considerado como un paradigma claramente hostil frente a la concesión de derechos a los animales o, incluso, al reconocimiento de un estatuto que fuera más allá del de meros objetos para estos seres1. Esta opinión no se encuentra en absoluto alejada de lo que expresa la literalidad de las obras del filósofo alemán. Como expondremos en breve, son frecuentes sus alusiones a la falta de valor intrínseco de los animales o a la posibilidad de que los seres humanos los utilizaran para sus propios fines, sin más salvedades que las obligaciones morales indirectas que podrían surgir en nuestro trato con ellos. En los últimos tiempos, no obstante, ha surgido un movimiento interesante entre las filas del kantismo que ha tratado de matizar —o incluso rectificar— a su fuente original a través de una relectura de su pensamiento que permitiría, de resultar fructífera, alterar sustancialmente el estatuto de los animales en el mundo kantiano. Los principales valedores de esta alternativa son, probablemente, Julian Franklin y Christine Korsgaard. A lo largo de este texto tendremos ocasión tanto de exponer el pensamiento original de Immanuel Kant, tal y como quedó manifestado en sus obras originales, como de analizar críticamente las teorías de estos dos autores neokantianos.
