The concept of ecology today is used not only in science but is also widely exploited beyond its boundaries. Under such circumstances, it has acquired semantic and substantive ambiguity. At the same time, the meaning and content of the term are subject to debate. Reference sources, however, do not always or do not fully reflect the modern diversity of meanings associated with the concept. A general framework for grouping the various uses of the word "ecology" in modern vocabulary is proposed.
