Satellite Trials (STs) are farmer-managed trials conducted in existing cocoa plantations. These trials evaluate, under real farming conditions, the effects of good agricultural practices and improved nutrient supply on cocoa bean yield. The first generation of STs aims to assess the impact of optimized cocoa tree management and nutrient supply. A new system for estimating cocoa nutrient demand is compared with existing fertilizer recommendations. The trials measure growth, pod set, and bean yield responses to both fertilizer regimes against an unfertilized control, considering interactions with shade levels and management practices. The primary goal is to validate fertilizer recommendations in farmers’ fields across diverse environments, providing site-specific and reliable guidance to increase cocoa production profitably. Farmers, together with technicians, apply insecticides, fungicides, and fertilizers, conduct weeding, sanitary pruning, structural pruning, and take measurements of tree growth, shade levels, and cocoa bean production.
