Abstract

Introduction: In recent decades, there has been a relative shift regarding cigarette use; the traditional cigarette has been gradually replaced by electronic devices due to existing public policies that highlight the harm caused by tobacco. However, because of their more recent use, electronic smoking devices have not been the focus of the same awareness campaigns, which does not diminish their harmful effects on health, especially among their main target audience, adolescents. Objectives: To identify in the literature the effects that the use of electronic smoking devices can have on adolescents' lives, encompassing biological, behavioral, and epidemiological aspects, aiming to understand the possible risks, gaps in the literature, and the implications for public and oral health during adolescence. Methods: A narrative literature review on the use of electronic smoking devices during adolescence and their impacts on this stage of life. The studies were selected through searches in databases such as Consensus, Scielo, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using keywords related to the topic, including “electronic cigarette,” “vaping,” “oral health,” and “adolescence.” Conclusion:Health alterations in adolescents related to the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems are frequent among younger individuals, resulting from peer influence and social media stimulation. The false perception of lower risk and the popularization of use without regulation or awareness policies enable the early adoption of these devices by young people, which increasingly exacerbates health issues in adolescents, leading to neurological, cardiorespiratory, and oral health dysfunctions.
