An Introduction To Charak Samhitokta Rishi Bhrigu and Evaluation of His Contribution To Ayurveda

Abstract

Abstract Rishi Brhigu is credited with compiling the portion of the Rigveda and the Atharvaveda. He is the originator of the famous lineage (gotra) called Bhriguvansha, His decedents are called as Bhargavas. In his lineage famous sages such as Jamdagni and Parshuram was born. He also fathered very famous demon teacher Shukracharya. His reference is found in both famous Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. He advised both legendary Rama and Yudhishthira. He was respected by both Rama and Yudhishthira. His life story gives idea about his dynamic multifaceted personality. He tested the divine trinity. In him we not only find the typical penance observing sage but a philosopher, a consultant, a teacher, a thinker and a scientist who gave the rationale for origin of earth and the universe. He is the author of famous book on predictive astrology called Bhrigu Samhita which is still consulted in many parts of India. He is considered as one of the sapta Rishis (the seven great sages) mention in the Vedas, puranas and upanishadas. Maharishi Bhrigu was present in the conclave of rishis conducted beneath the mountains of Himalayas, some 5000 years ago. We find the reference of medicinal preparations made by him in famous Ayurvedic book ‘Vangasen Samita’. Hence, it is necessary to explore the Maharshi Bhrigu and his contribution to Ayurveda.
