Abstract

The study of costumbrismo and regionalism in Adelardo Covarsí’s painting explores how his work synthesizes nineteenth-century pictorial tradition with the regenerational ideals of early twentieth-century Spain. Covarsí transformed costumbrismo into a language of identity, where Extremadura’s landscapes, hunting scenes, and rural figures express both a heroic and intimate vision of his homeland. His art celebrates the dignity of rural labor and the profound connection between humans and nature, echoing the Generation of ’98 and its search for a renewed Spanish spirit. Trained in the artistic environment of Badajoz and influenced by Felipe Checa, Covarsí united academic discipline with a deep sense of authenticity. His hunting compositions, portraits of gamekeepers, and depictions of peasants became symbols of the Extremaduran character, marked by restraint, strength, and introspection. Ultimately, his work embodies the maturity of regionalist painting in Extremadura and serves as a paradigmatic example of how local inspiration could convey universal values, offering a visual expression of a rural and spiritual Spain rooted in its land and traditions.
