La mosca blanca (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) y el “blanqueamiento” del cultivo de chayote (Sechium edule)

Abstract

El estudio se realizó durante los meses de febrero y mayo del año 2009 en la localidad de Ujarrás, Paraíso de Cartago, Costa Rica, a una altura de 900 msnm con una temperatura promedio de 25 °C, y una precipitación promedio de 3500 mm. El objetivo de este estudio fue valorar si la presencia de la mosca blanca se relaciona con el blanqueamiento del cultivo de chayote e identificar la (s) especie (s) relacionadas. Para tal efecto se construyeron ocho jaulas con dimensiones 2,0 m de alto y 0,70 m de ancho, en las cuales, se colocó una maceta con una semilla del cultivo de chayote (sin brotar). En cuatro de las jaulas se introdujeron adultos de mosca blanca y las otras se mantuvieron aisladas del insecto. Durante el período de estudio se realizó un total de seis evaluaciones para contar el número total de peciolos de color verde y los que presentaban blanqueamiento. Se empleó un análisis de covarianza, donde la covariable fue el número total de peciolos. Además, se analizó la relación entre el número de adultos de mosca blanca introducidos en las jaulas y la cantidad de peciolos descoloridos, con base a la prueba de correlación de Pearson. Las plantas con presencia de mosca blanca presentaron un 49,79% de peciolos blancos. En las plantas sin la presencia del insecto los peciolos se mantuvieron verdes en un 100%. La mosca blanca relacionada con está decoloración es la especie Bemisia tabaci biotipo B. Observaciones realizadas indican que factores tales como: la nutrición inadecuada, disminución del riego y temperaturas altas predisponen a las plantas de chayote a un aumento en la incidencia del blanqueamiento.No obstante, la presencia del insecto es indispensable para que el síntoma se manifieste.Palabras claves: Bemisia tabaci biotipo B, peciolos verdes, peciolos blancos.
