Algumas estratégias de negação sintática no português brasileiro [Some syntactic negation strategies in Brazilian Portuguese]

Abstract

Negation in Brazilian Portuguese syntax is examined from a dialectological perspective. The focus lies on the positional relationship between the negation operator and the elements within its scope. We explore the well-known trichotomy of preverbal, double, and postverbal negation. Moreover, we introduce a tripartite classification consisting of sentence negation, complex phrase negation, and constituent negation. Finally, we identify nine specific strategies (or types) of syntactic negation. Keywords: Dialectology. Syntax. Negation. Linguistic Variation. Extralinguistic Correlations.
