Summary/Abstract: Significant changes have been made in last decade in terms of empowering women – both on individual and a class level. The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence with its all encompassing and groundbreaking nature safeguards women rights through diverse means. Nonetheless, gender based violence against women, including rape is still pervasive in our societies, undermining universal clause on gender equality. This article approaches rape, as one of the forms of gender based violence. It disassembles the phenomenon of rape into pieces with a view of examining its socio cultural genesis.
